Assessment Background

Assessment for the PGCE consists of 4 pieces of written work (this is not the same as the assessment for reccomensation for QTS). These are:

  • A Method Assignment at LEVEL 6 - set by your method tutor
  • Two Learning and Teaching Assignments at LEVEL 7 (see below)
  • A Method Assignment at LEVEL 7 - set by your method tutor

When you submit an assignment you are expected to use the appropriate cover sheet - these cover sheets will be on Canvas and also e-mailed to you by your tutors.

* Note: If you are registered with a learning disability you need complete the section on the coversheet

The passmark for all secondary assignments is 50, you MUST score 50 (or more!) for all assignments.

The Assignments

The assessment for the M level requirements for the secondary trainees is in three modules, each of these are worth 20 level 7 (M level) credits. The Learning and Teaching consists of two of these, with the second divided into two sections.

When writing for academic work is is vital that you follow the conventions for writing. See the section on level 7 writing for more on this but some key points are that you:

  • Write formally
  • Stick to the word limits
  • Reference correctly.
Critical Reflection

You might want to think about critcal reflection as part of your course and as of part of your PGCE:

Guidance for submission

Once you have written your assignment you need to submit it:

  • Ensure you have the correct cover sheet
  • Ensure all your apendices etc... are part of one file OR that you have zipped several files into one
  • Check you have used the correct referencing and formatting (Essays should be typed using a standard font: Times, Arial or Verdana are suggested. Point size 12 at either 1.5 or double line spacing.)
  • Submission is via Canvas - login to the "PGCE Secondary" site and then click on the assignment tab.

All assignments are assessed under the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications (FHEQ).

Late submission of assignments without permission results in penalties being applied. Any trainee who fails to hand work in by the due deadline will be subject to the late submission procedure detailed in the PGCE Programme Regulations, unless the trainee has the express written permission of the Programme Director for an extension. To be considered for a late submission talk to your tutor in the first instance and then the Programme Director.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is using the work of others without acknowledging your source of information; that is, passing off someone else’s work as your own (either intentionally or unintentionally). When you submit any piece of work for assessment you are required to attach a cover sheet which contains a declaration, which you must sign. Your work will not be accepted unless the declaration has been signed. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have understood the guidance you have been given about referencing – and therefore how not to commit plagiarism.

To ensure you have not committed plagiarism make sure you have referenced your work carefully and accurately.

If you have any doubts you must seek advice from your supervisor or tutor.
